The Year 2020 -Covid 19 and Your Mental Health
It has never been more important to focus on both physical and mental health as it has been in the year 2020.
We have been through one of the hardest years in history and the hardest in our lifetime. Our collective journey through 2020 was one that made us take a step back and look at how we have, as global citizens, prioritized and even either prepared or not, for what hit us at the beginning of the year.
As children, we have walked in our respective maps of the world, oblivious of the fact that we are not as far apart as we thought we were. We ignored the fact that we are connected.
Our Collective Responsibility
We talk about the World Wide Web without a single thought that there is a physical web of connectedness too. As we cross borders by planes, trains, cruise ships, and cars, we carry can have extra baggage without the faintest clue that we could be carrying a ticking bomb under our skin. Innocently becoming carriers of bad tidings.
What we do…Our responsibility to act swiftly when we mess up has become quite clear in the year 2020.
We Have Different Reactions to Danger- Freeze, Fight, or Flight
We have not reacted to the news in the same way.
Some decided to lie to themselves that the virus did not exist. Others isolated more than necessary, while yet others felt that ignoring the guidelines because they felt their lives were being restricted for no good reason since they were not in any danger of getting seriously ill or dying…. and they didn’t think it was their responsibility to help keep others less fortunate.
This was a year of showing us who we really are when hell breaks loose. Do we Freeze and pretend everything is as usual (refuse to follow the guidelines), do we Fight and do what is necessary to get back to our normal daily routines? Or do we bolt and leave for safer spaces if we are fortunate enough to do that?
Those Who Go To War
Just as different countries chose different solutions to fight the virus, different people had different reactions. We all talk about Taiwan and New Zealand on the positive and quick reactive response… and then there are those who chose to ignore the importance of reacting swiftly and have suffered because of it.
On the ground level, there are the ones who chose to keep working at the frontlines. The hospital, the daycare, and all the other essential workers who keep working relentlessly, as I write this.
The year 2020 has filled many with stress, angst, and foreboding about what life without physical contact with many loved ones and friends means. Children growing up in isolation and having to be taught not to interact with people they know…. and we cannot help wondering what the future holds for a generation born in such uncertain times.
What we need to do is not ignore the fact that we need help to deal with the thoughts that lead to all different types of unwanted states.
What did you do to deal with uncertainty and isolation? What happened to you, that made your future plans different?
Some lost their jobs and others lost loved ones, while yet others didn’t deal with isolation as well.
Now, it looks like we can see a light at the end of the tunnel
A vaccine is ready and the future looks brighter. This will take some time to reach everyone and we need each other to hold on a while longer.
Whatever you have to deal with to help you have some normalcy, you do not have to go through it alone. Some need more help than others. Self-care is not selfish. Contact me if you would like to talk about it and find the right solution for you. It might be a Life Coach you need or a therapist. If it is the latter, let’s talk and see if it is NLP or Hypnotherapy that is the best solution for you.
Remember, some of us react when danger is out of the way. Listen to your mind, your body, and act accordingly.
Let’s look forward to 2021 with hope and the resolution to make it a year of pursuing a better you.
Personal Contribution, or Taking Care of My Mental Health
…and where am I in all this. I have tried to practice what I teach. If you think a situation makes you uncomfortable – to say the least, find a solution that makes you feel better.
I decided to work as part of the solution, in August 2020. I have helped test people for Covid-19. All it took was to call and ask if I could be of any assistance.
By doing so I learned more, helped curb the infection curve, and helped myself become less worried about how to protect myself and my family. Of course, that is not a solution for everyone. We all have to find a way of dealing with the obstacles that appear on our paths. With or without help.
You can book a free discovery session to learn more and be able to make a qualified decision as many of my clients do.
